'Coterie' is a group show by Elaine Forrest, Jo Mcintosh and Ashleigh Norrie. With a focus on textiles, the show can be found in the upstairs space at Foodstory in their eco shop / project space. The back wall has hosted pop up exhibitions from Jetpack Dinosaur and most recently Stuart Allan and seem's to be a good fit for the multi patter based works in Coterie.
I've been a fan of Jo's work ever since her show at Parx Cafe (check it out here) with her print works forming a nice centre piece to the show. Her mellow tones and soft, almost ghost like prints help form a bridge between the uniform and hyper colourful works of Elaine to the beautiful bold patterns and sometimes graphic style elements of Ashleigh's pieces. I've been a fan of Ashleighs work for some time after discovering her feed on instagram and was instantly taken by the circular tapestries and the mini universes they contain. Elaine's work is new to me but I instantly felt it would look fantastic splashed across a giant wall mural style with such bright colours and simple natural motifs. Also for those not in the know a 'Coterie' is the name for a small group or collective who have a shared interest, in this case being the natural environment and the wonders it holds so quite an apt title for the show.
Although I'm a bit late on writing about the trio you still have til the end of the month to check out the show first hand. During my visit I only managed to get a few quick snaps as Foodstory is a working space where people eat, chill, work and study so you never know who you will bump into like I did with local illustrator and skater Jess Connor, aka Diet Bleach 666. Be sure to pop down, pick up some eco friendly goods, buy some art and support what is a fantastic space not just for artists but for Aberdeen!
