'Little Shop of Horrors' by Corvid Eyes & The Little Bat Club at Kekun Studio!

'Little Shop of Horrors' was a pop up exhibition by Corvid Eyes & The Little Bat Club hosted  at Kekun Studio a few weeks back. The studio is currently home to myself and Mary Louise Butterworth and can be found in the Rosemount area of Aberdeen. Although we've hosted Art Hive (back in July) its taken us a bit of time to find our feet and trying to organise in between projects and working full time has been challenging. But over the last few months we've had regular visitors to the studio and during one such visit while working together for another project the idea came up about transforming the space into a gallery and doing a show. Having featured Jenny & Susan on the blog and with the added Painted Doors connection it seemed like a good fit for our first foray into the world of pop up art exhibition's.

The only problem is we had a week to do it before Halloween! I don't think the artists were too fazed by this tight deadline but we had a studio full of stuff to tidy away and a new wall to build for hanging work and projecting on. Thankfully I'd designed my side of the space in such a way that it would only require a few studs in the ceiling to pin the top row of the wall and we'd be good to go. Cue 2 days of late night painting and a day of hanging the wonderful works of the artists. The show opened on Halloween night, complete with fancy dress code for attendees (although my own efforts were slightly lacking due to time constraints) and we welcomed old friends and new faces alike. Jenny & Susan took full advantage of the wall space and managed to show a good mix of work with some finished pieces and some work that is on going and still in development. We also sourced a few extra pieces including anatomical models and skeletons, one of the perks of my day job!

Large scale collages, screen printed fabrics and film all merged to make up the show along with a special table assortment, almost  a shrine which featured smaller works, ceramic bat heads and a mumified cat. Although Susan's latest work focuses on the wonderful world of bats she also included some newer cat prints and some stunning hand stiched and printed fabric pieces. Jenny continued with many of the themes of her previous works, bugs, classy women and with it being halloween some slightly creepier animals. Jenny also worked on a special digital print for the show along with a limited edition hand printed tote bag. With the artists putting in so much effort it seemed a shame to only have the show on for 4 days so we've set up an online shop for the studio (check it out here) where you can purchase prints and original pieces. Over the course of the 4 days we welcomed in friends and their families with Jenny on hand to speak about her work and practice to anyone who would listen, giving them a great insight into the work on display.

We had a great time helping set up and hosting the show at the studio and I think it proved our space can work as a gallery. Its always been a goal to have a space like Kekun which can fill some of the gaps in what Aberdeen has to offer and we're making plans for more with a Mood of Collapse 10 Year Show in the works for early December and a skateboard related show early in 2019. We can't thank Jenny & Susan enough, not just for the show but for the general support and enthusiasm they've shown for the space and for being the amazing artists they are. I'm off to feed Audrey II but check out the photos and a short video about 'Little Shop of Horrors' below and if you want to keep in the loop then follow the studio on Instagram here and check out the online shop here!
