William Moulding is a local screen printer, oil and gas worker and also master of the best krooked grind in Aberdeen. I've know Willy for longer than I'd like to admit, being a friend of my brothers from college and also one of the first skateboarders I met when I started skating some 20 odd years ago. From then til now Willy has been a creative force along with his partner Jo Gannon, constantly experimenting and creating new work and pushing what can be achieved with the humble screen print.
For the past year Willy has been teasing snippets of new work and revealing some of the mini prints via his instagram feed, well worth a follow. Although working with abstract designs the prints contain something special, combining both digital elements, photography and line work to find a balance. Where some might look for a full picture or recognisable image, instead its the smaller details like the lines of a cabin or sometimes creating a sense of place through colour and shape that feed into the print works. Abstracted and yet tangible if you can see past the obvious.
For 'Offshore Fieldnotes' Willy has culled ideas and sketches from his offshore journals, an essential tool for capturing all those amazing ideas you have when stuck on a boat in the middle of the Atlantic ocean. When back on dry land Willy spends most of his free time at Peacock Visual Arts in the print studio, refining those ideas and teasing out new designs, often with mistakes leading to new discoveries both in shape and form on paper. With large scale screen prints and a special 30 mini print box set, the exhibition is an all encompassing affair with great attention to detail like the laser etched box and the custom 'Offshore Fieldnotes' pencil, a future heirloom. Certainly the meticulous hanging of the 30 individual prints is almost an artwork in itself and is worthy of your attention!
The show highlights some of the work that goes on in the Peacocks print studio and for me ties together those traditional skills with an artist operating very much in the now. Along side preparing for his solo show Willy has also produced a print for the world famous Jealous Print Studios in London as part of their 'Jealous Needs You' group show. When you see some of the artists involved in the show you might think Willy has done well to be included but in fact he's more than deserving and proves what I've been saying for some ten years now, Aberdeen artists hold their own both in Aberdeen and beyond!
The exhibition is the culmination of thousands of hours spent both offshore and at home and really shows an artist at the top of his game. With print box sets, pencils and a nice catalogue, there's something for all budgets and with the London crowd tuned into Willy's work, now is probably a good time to buy something from a rising star. Well done Willy and thanks for always being such an inspiration.
