I was chuffed to see 45rpm announce a new solo show opening during my trip to London. Along with all the other plans I'd pop along and catch his work in the flesh having been a big fan for a number of years. With a playful edge and slick execution, 45's work satisfies on a few level's and if you're into bold lines and visual puns. However my assumption that he'd be showing in London proved to be wrong, instead 'Can of Worms' would be opening in Porto in Portugal at Circus Network!
Now usually I only cover exhibitions or events I've physically been to, sometimes you have to experience a show to really put the pieces together and form an idea about it. But being 2019 and seeing so much vie instagram I decided to branch out a little and explore a bit more of the artists and shows happening 'beyond' Aberdeen. One of the benefits of this is seeing cool spaces in other cities and countries and Circus Network looks the bomb. With gallery and shop space indoors and a cool outdoor space, its got me planning my next trip to Portugal!
The show itself is a veritable can of worms, pulling together a mixture of original sketches, prints and some brand new one offs from 45rpm. Clean lines, visual puns and fun characters are central to 45s work but its his ability to recreate those fine lines using spray cans that always makes me look a little closer. While on site installing his new art work he also painted two walls at Circus Network and added some street pieces which you can watch being created here.
A scan through the Circus Network pages made me quite envious not just for their space but for the sun that comes with it. Although we can't rely on the weather I do hope that our Kekun Studio space can help by providing space and potentially walls for visiting artists and local graff and street artists like Abz Jawa and AlterEgo. But defo time to book a research trip, bloody loved Lisbon when I visited a few years back!
