As the spring bulbs emerge from their hibernation new buds are also appearing across Aberdeen's cultural soil. The newest offering comes from Growing Pains, a new platform spearheaded by artists Caitlin Robb & Ace Ireland!
I've been a fan of both artists since discovering their individual work both in local galleries and plastered on the streets of Aberdeen so its an exciting prospect for the duo to be joining forces. Although Aberdeen has a lot of great initiatives already I think its really healthy when artists decide to create their own space and set out their own vision around the making, showing and curation of art. The more voices the better. And the duo have already set out their stall with a manifesto which you can read below and a bit about how and why they came together.
"Growing Pains was never just for us, but for bringing back the community that was lost in previous years. The natural back and forth that comes with just interacting with other people is what pushes us to do more and make more. Creating an openly relaxed space, wherever we end up, allowing people (including us) to show work that would have been left on the sidelines."
There's been many questions about the impact of the pandemic and lockdowns in the context of lost education and lost opportunities for connection that are so important, especially in art school settings. At least in this instance the duo are grabbing the bull by the horns (or maybe grabbing Gregory by the horns) and forging a path not only for themselves but for their friends and peers. It's great to see and I look forward to supporting their efforts in the coming months.
You can keep up to date with Growing Pains via their Twitter & Instagram so be sure to drop them a follow.
